Why Prepare First
Skiing places unusual demands on the body — the quads, glutes, hamstrings, hips, core, balance and endurance all work together, run after run. And recreational skiers who only get out a few times a year ask their legs to do all of it cold. A little structured preparation changes how those first days on the mountain feel.
Build strength through the quads, glutes, and hamstrings for the demands of longer days on the mountain.
Train the joints that steer every turn so your legs track cleanly through each carve.
Stay centered over your skis when the terrain shifts underfoot.
Hold your line through bumps and variable snow without wobble.
Build the ski-specific stamina to keep going through that last afternoon run.

For recreational skiers and snowboarders who want to feel prepared — not scrambling — before the season starts.

Dr. Doug Endel is the founder of Atlas Rising in Westerville, Ohio. He created this routine after researching and using strength, balance, and conditioning exercises to prepare himself for ski season and time on the mountain with his family.
What started as his own pre-trip preparation became a structured program — the same exercises, progressions, and schedule, organized so any recreational skier can follow along at their own level.
